Scientists at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Hubei University for Nationalities in China have created a cheap, ecologically-friendly nanoparticle coating which they claim causes cotton to clean itself of stains and odors when exposed to sunlight.
A report from the B.B.C. says that the engineers' research was based on the use of titanium dioxide which already forms a part of compounds to create self-cleaning windows, odor-free socks and stay-clean tiles. Initially, with cotton, however it only acted a self-cleaner under ultraviolet lights rather than simple sunlight.
