Flame retardant legislation championed by a Central Minnesota lawmaker has been signed into law by Gov. Mark Dayton of Minnesota.
A bill authored by Rep. Jeff Howe and Sen. John Marty was one of 17 bills Dayton signed Tuesday.
To reduce firefighters' exposure to carcinogens, the bill bans four flame-retardant chemicals found in upholstered furniture and children's products manufactured after July 2018.
Thirty years ago, Howe was a fire investigator working to make sure flame-suppressing chemicals were added to products including furniture and children's toys.
Then Howe lost firefighter friends to cancer.
