October arrives in a flurry of pink ribbons as we observe National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What began as a week-long event in October 1985 has become an industry in itself. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has its own Web site (nbcam.org), and any number of celebrity spokeswomen. Hundreds of pink ribbon promotional products are available, with pink ribbons decorating everything from sweatshirts to kitchen appliances to yogurt lids to jewelry.
