New York-based apparel maker Anvil Knitwear has revealed that the next line in its sustainable apparel collection will be AnvilRecycled T-shirts. The T-shirts are made from a pre-consumer recycled cotton blend and come in nine colors in sizes XS through 4XL. AnvilRecycled
T-shirts will be available in Spring 2008.
“Anvil Knitwear is committed to environmentally sustainable growth and the production of innovative, eco-friendly products at affordable prices,” said Anthony Corsano, CEO of Anvil Knitwear. “With AnvilRecycled T-shirts, we are able to eliminate waste and reduce energy usage while still offering the same comfort and quality as our traditional cotton shirts.”
The new short-sleeved T-shirts are made from pre-shrunk, 5.5 oz. pre-consumer recycled, cotton blend jersey. They will be available in recycled black, charcoal, heather, brown, sand, red, navy, blue and green.
The primary components of AnvilRecycled T-shirts are the clippings that are created when making other T-shirts. The clippings are then sorted by color and chopped into a fine, linty material. The chopped material is spun into yarn, which is then used to produce the recycled cotton T-shirts.
The simplified manufacturing process used to create AnvilRecycled T-shirts is good for the environment because it reduces energy and resource use. By reprocessing pre-consumer textile scraps into consumer-ready shirts, Anvil is able to reduce incinerator and landfill waste. The dyeing process is also eliminated because the textile clippings are color blended.
“Anvil launched its sustainable collection last year with AnvilOrganic T-shirts, and due to tremendous success, expanded the line to include ladies’ and youth cuts this year,” Corsano added. “I’m excited to add another inventive, earth-friendly product this spring with the recycled T-shirts. There is a growing market for eco-friendly apparel. So many companies are committing themselves to environmental and social responsibility initiatives that we are finding it hard to keep up with demand. We will continue to expand our sustainable collection in surprising and innovative ways.”
