Canada's Defense Minister Squeezes Stress Balls Out of Budget
Canada's Defense Minister Peter MacKay has ordered the Department of National Defense (DND) to stop an order of 20,000 stress balls, the National Post reported.
On Friday, a website advertising Canadian government contracts posted a request from the DND for 20,000 orange stress balls to be used as "promotional items," according to the site. The tender call specified that the items would need to be delivered by the end of March. MacKay ordered the request to be canceled later that day.
"As soon as Minister MacKay was made aware of this contract, he instructed officials to immediately cancel this unnecessary expense of taxpayer money," Jay Paxton, the minister's spokesman, said in an email.
The Canadian government has requested budget cuts between five and 10 percent across nearly all agencies, including the DND. The Globe and Mail reports that the department didn't respond to questions about the order.
