McDonald's Wants You to Wear Your 'B-Day Suit' for McFlurry Anniversary

I know we said McDonald's wants you to wear your "birthday suit," but we have to remind you (as your attorneys) not to show up to McDonald’s in the nude.

This is just a clever turn of phrase on McDonald’s behalf. The fast food restaurant released a branded loungewear set to celebrate the the McFlurry's 25th anniversary from home, like so many of us are doing for our own birthdays these days.

“The trendy suit adds a pop of color to your wardrobe with a playful McFlurry pattern displaying three delicious McFlurry flavors: the new limited-time Chips Ahoy!, Oreo and M&M’s,” McDonald’s said in a press release. “Every order of the McFlurry 25th B-Day Suit includes a coupon for a free McFlurry dessert—which can be easily enjoyed on-the-go or around the house with the suit’s insulated coat pocket and shorts pocket for your McFlurry spoon.”

Yep, you read that right: An insulated pocket, so you can walk home from McDonald’s comfortably, with your McFlurry staying cold in your pocket. The future sure is something.

As we've seen, McDonald's has made significant investments in branded merchandise over the last few years, and has had the success to match. Most recently, it was the Travis Scott collaboration, but before that was its 18-karat gold Shamrock Shake jewelry (for charity), its "Quarter Pounder Fan Club" and its McDelivery promotions, which were a huge hit. In December 2019, McDonald's launched its first full-time online merch store.

The branded loungewear set launched last week, priced at $25 and available at McDonald's online store. BAMKO, the distributor behind the promotion, said the sets sold out in under an hour.

"From video-chat birthday wishes to home-made sign car parades, we know birthdays look a little different in 2020," said McDonald’s vice president of U.S. communications David Tovar in the press release. "As a go-to birthday party destination for generations, we knew we couldn't let 25 years of the McFlurry pass us by without a special celebration, 2020 style. We're thrilled to give fans a new way to celebrate at-home and experience feel-good birthday moments with McDonald's by offering the one-of-a-kind McFlurry 25th B-Day Suit."

Items like loungewear were already popular pre-pandemic, but the work-from-home world we live in right now makes them even more sought-after. Add-in the item-specific feature of an insulated pocket, and that’s a memorable promotion.
