NBA Looks to Place Advertisements on Jerseys
According to ESPN, the NBA sent out a memo this week ahead of Sunday's owners meeting before the All-Star Game in Toronto, that discusses the possibility of corporate logos on jerseys.
Sources say the NBA's planning committee wants feedback from the teams prior to the April Board of Governors meeting. The league proposal would enable teams to sell one corporate logo on their uniforms for the 2017-2018 season.
The proposal would give 50 percent of the money from jersey ad sales to the teams, and the other 50 percent would go into a revenue-sharing pot in order to counteract the disparity in market size for larger cities.
This idea is nothing new—Adam Silver, past deputy commissioner of the NBA, pushed the selling of ads on jerseys in 2011. However, lately the discussion has been gaining more momentum, and this weekend, the players will wear a Kia logo on their All-Star Game jerseys.
