R.S. Owens Completes Phil Simms All-Iron Award
Chicago-based award and gift manufacturer R.S. Owens announced completion of the annual Phil Simms All-Iron Awards. Simms, one of CBS television's lead analysts for the NFL, has traditionally announced the winners of the "Phil Simms All-Iron Team" on Thanksgiving Day since 1999. The award honors top NFL players and coaches.
The award design was inspired by Simms' obsession with ironing, which started as a young child.
"When Mom did the wash, she just threw it out there for all eight kids," Simms explained. "If you wanted to look good, you had to iron."
According to his mother, as a child, Simms even ironed his football uniforms.
The award is in the shape of on old-fashioned cast iron with an elaborate cast metal handle and fabricated metal face. Each of the 19 parts that make up the trophy are fabricated by hand and matched up along the way to ensure that all parts fit within an exacting tolerance. The front face and large round center medallion are created by etching metal with a textured surface and then shearing the face to give a smooth, diamond-cut appearance. After each part is fitted and polished, the parts are electroplated in fine silver and given a final buffing. Finally, the parts are assembled and a coating of clear lacquer is applied to preserve the bright silver finish.
In 2014, R.S. Owens celebrates its 76th year of inspiring achievement. R.S. Owens has produced awards such as The Oscar, Emmy, American Idol, Russian Golden Gramophone Music Award, London International Advertising Award, GMA Dove Award, Athena Leadership Award, Indy Grand Prix Cup, CMA Lifetime Achievement Award, Cotton Bowl, NASCAR Pepsi Max 400, Phil Simms All-Iron Award and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Award.
