SanMar Donates 1,000 Backpacks to Issaquah Food Bank
Employees of SanMar Corporation, a leading industry supplier of apparel and accessories from Seattle, donated 1,000 backpacks to the food bank in Issaquah, Wash., where the company is headquartered. Employees collected over 750 backpacks and SanMar provided an additional 250 to meet the needs of the local community as students head back to the 24 schools in Issaquah.
"SanMar's generous backpack drive has truly produced the most successful school supply donation that the city of Issaquah has ever experienced in the history of this program," said Cori Kauk, executive director of the Issaquah Food Bank. "The entire 2012 school supply program will be used to a model best practices for partnership between businesses and Food Banks across the state of Washington and perhaps the nation."
The backpack drive ran through the month of July, with each department in SanMar's corporate office competing to bring in the most backpacks. These light-hearted department rivalries spurred massive participation from SanMar employees with donations exceeding the initial goal.
"We want to ensure that the kids in our community are armed with the tools for success when they head back to school," said Lee Strom, senior marketing manager at SanMar. "We know that many families are struggling in this tough economy and it's important to us to do our part help out."
