Digitl Ink to Launch Direct to Fabric Water-based Inks
September 20, 2012

Banking on extensive research in the R&D laboratory, Digitl Ink, a Cheshire, UK-based ink manufacturer, intends to launch two direct to fabric water-based ink varieties—Tex-AD and Tex-PG, for wide-format printers, by close of the current year.

Following success of its Versatile Textile and Vinyl (VTV)—Mild Solvent Inks, which deliver best printing results, both on Textile and Vinyl substrates, the company had been working to develop new water-based inks.

The idea is to produce inks that can be used to directly print on a wide range of fabrics, without involvement of any sublimation.

Will a Federal Prisoner Steal Your Job?
September 20, 2012

It's hard to compete with workers willing to take pay as low as 23 cents an hour. Do we mean workers in Mexico or China? No. We mean Americans in federal prisons.

An Alabama clothing-maker recently found out just how hard, according to the Myrtle Beach Sun-News: American Apparel of Selma had to lay off 225 workers after it lost a contract for U.S. Army jackets to UNICOR, a $900 million behemoth with 89 factories around the U.S. Its workforce consists entirely of convicts.

If you thought prisoners made only license plates, think again.

Can You Patent Yoga Pants?
September 17, 2012

A lawsuit over $98 yoga pants feels sort of ridiculous its face. But the case is actually a big deal.

Intellectual property has historically only played a minor role in the fashion industry, and this suit may signal an important shift.

The classic argument for intellectual property is that it encourages innovation. If there's no intellectual property, the reasoning goes, companies won't spend the time and money to come up with new ideas, because their competitors will just steal them.

But the fashion industry doesn't work like that.

76 Percent of Americans Say Buying U.S.-Made Apparel is Important
September 14, 2012

More than three in four Americans consider the U.S. origin of a garment an "extremely" or "somewhat" important factor in their purchase decision, according to a survey conducted by the NPD Group for Women's Wear Daily. That's a 29.8 percent increase from 10 years ago.

Although Marshal Cohen, NPD Group's chief analyst, wasn't surprised at how attitudes towards domestic manufacturing have changed, he didn't anticipate the strength of support in a flaccid economy. Still, he remained cautious. "When you ask people to pinpoint their feelings about something, you have to take the numbers with a grain of salt," he said.
