In 2010, the corporate management of Knights Apparel Inc. and the activists behind the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) embarked on an experiment together. They wanted to see whether it was possible to run a viable apparel company while maintaining relatively high labor conditions for workers in the developing world. The result was the Alta Gracia factory in the Dominican Republic, where all of the workers are enrolled in a union and are paid more than three times the country’s legal minimum wage.
